The Tennessee Human Rights Commission ("the Commission") is an independent state agency which investigates allegations of discrimination in housing, employment, places of public accommodations and Title VI for state agencies. If you feel that you have been discriminated against because of your race, color, gender, disability, national origin, religion, creed, familial status (housing only) or age (40 and over, employment only) then you may file a complaint of discrimination.
Complaints of discrimination must be filed with the Commission within 180 days of the alleged discriminatory act. The Commission does not accept anonymous complaints. Specific information is required to assess your complaint for acceptance. To assist the Commission with providing efficient service to you, please answer all questions that apply to your allegations thoroughly. Once your complaint is received, it will be reviewed for acceptance under the Tennessee Human Rights Act and the Tennessee Disability Act. You will be notified once the review is completed.
There are two ways to file a complaint:
Call us at (800) 251-3589 or visit our Nashville office. A staff member can provide you with a complaint form and answer your questions.
The Commission has a workshare agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and will transfer your complaint if the allegations are outside our jurisdiction.
